【Title】Simulation-Based Design under Uncertainty
【Abstract】Engineering design is increasingly performed with the aid of simulations, where uncertainty is ubiquitous in engineering design. Uncertainty can come from the random physical nature, as well as from the lack of knowledge. It could significantly impact performances of a product if it was not accounted for during the design stage. Reliability-based design and robust design are typical design methodologies to mitigate the effects of uncertainty. Reliability-based design ensures that design requirements be satisfied at a desired probability level while robust design makes the design performance not sensitive to uncertainties. In real engineering applications, probabilistic analysis, Design of Experiments, computer simulations, and optimization are usually integrated under the design framework. The major challenge is the good balance between accuracy and efficiency. Several computational methods for reliability-based design and robust design will be introduced with demonstrative examples.
【About the speaker】Dr. Du’s research interest includes robust design, reliability-based design, multidisciplinary optimization, and simulation-based design under uncertainty. He was the principal investigator for two grants sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation and other research projects. He has published over eighty research papers and currently serves on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Reliability and Safety.
Looking forward to your attendance.
